Closing Time

Closing Time is a telephone helpline for anyone who has an emotional relationship to her city. The performance starts off at a reception where the visitor receives a telephone and a call. The operator initiates a walk, guiding the visitor over the phone. By taking a close look at the city and its changes the operator invites the visitor to reflect upon her own political identity and how her life choices are mirrored by the changes in the city (or not). The walk leads the visitor along gentrified streets, past beggars spots and through shopping malls. The call ends and the visitor is gently led into an ongoing memorial ceremony where an opera singer gives voice to honour what has been lost.

In Closing Time memories and experiences are interwoven and a collective image of the city is created, each time with the sincere aim to offer care for the specific losses and hopes of each individual city and visitor. All our telephone operators are locally casted and work under secrecy.
